Excellent, I hadn't found that piece. What I originally was hoping for was a mainstream corroboration of the piece. I would agree it seems a bit premature to stand up and say, ooo look they are leaving, lets leave too. Since as the story you linked to puts it, only a few of the leaders of the Lakota are saying this. I really want to keep close tabs on this though.

The answer is, yes and no.

Yes, Russell Means and a few other activists have declared that "The Lakota Nation" is seceding. Note that there is no such organization, outside of these announcements.

So, no, this is not the official Lakota tribal governments. In fact, there is a lot of tension within the several tribes that Mr. Means is claiming to speak for - he often claims to speak for *all* Lakota, and not all of them want to be associated with *him*.

That's certainly the way it's always been. The question that remains to be seen is whether his standing in the community is enough to make this more than just for show.

As always, it's up to individuals to decide whether they will follow him or not; most of my family that lives out there is of the opinion that this is mostly a grab for attention.

*shrugs*

I find it to be an interesting step, but not necessarily a step that is likely to actually accomplish anything concrete in the foreseeable future. In my opinion, the energy used to publicize this (and the energy that will likely be spent trying to keep it in the eye of the world's media) would be better spent on fixing the many concrete needs of the people living on the reservations in the area of this new proposed nation.

The response I heard was that the other Lakota are incensed about this co-opting of the Nation and that his actions have no real merit or effect.
